Spring / Summer 2012 Class Offerings |
Fit to Flatter with Amy Herzog, author and designer Saturday, May 5, 1 - 4 p.m. $50 Instructor: Amy Herzog In this workshop, Amy Herzog uses the techniques and principles covered in her popular "Fit to Flatter" tutorials to give you all the tools you need to create perfectly flattering sweaters. Through discussion, photographs, and trying on sweaters, we'll cover three main topics: --The basic principles of dressing to flatter the body; --Personalized shape analysis, with in-class photographs of each student; --Application of the principles discussed in the first segment to the students' own shapes. Each of these three segments allows students to get hands-on practice with the principles at hand, via photography and group try-ons and comparisons of hand-knit sweaters. The first half of the class focuses on on the ways clothing affects our appearance, the different kinds of body shapes and other inherent characteristics of the body, and the typical ways one can modify the appearance of particular shapes using sweater elements. We then break to take photographs and in the latter half of the class, step through actual measurements and photo analysis to determine every student's shape and those sweaters that will best flatter. In this heavily "try it on!" portion of the class, we discuss ease, modifications, merging personal style with flattering elements, and specific candidate patterns. In addition to their own photograhps, students leave with substantial handouts highlighting the important principles for dressing to flatter the shape, modification math, and guidelines for each body type. Materials Students are asked to come wearing (or willing to change into) very fitted clothing because we will be taking pictures! Please also bring along a measuring tape, calculator and a sweater (or three) that fit you well or that you'd like help analyzing. You are also welcome, but not required, to bring along patterns you would like to discuss during class. |

Continental Knitting Tuesday (1:00 - 3:00 p.m.) June 5 $30 Instructor: Reba Maisel The Continental (or European) method of knitting carries the yarn in the left hand. This workshop is specifically for people who already knit with the American method and would like to learn another technique. This is useful when doing Fair Isle knitting as you can knit with one color in each hand. The Continental method also employs less arm and hand movement. |
Two Color Knitting (Fair Isle and Intarsia) Tuesday (1:00 - 3:00 p.m. OR 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.) June 12 $30 Instructor: Reba Maisel Most Fair Isle garments only use two colors per row even though then look more complicated. Therefore, both yarns are carried across the entire row. There are two methods one can use to achieve this. One is twisting the yarns as you proceed and the other is to knit one strand in the continental method and one strand in the American way. We will explore both possibilities. Intarsia is used when small areas are knit in another color. This involves using shorter lengths of yarn and joining them carefully. |
